pumpkin welcome

It appears to be a very New England thing to place small pumpkins on the entryway ledge. In an attempt to wow you with how charming this autumn tradition can be, I actually found very limited photography on the subject. In my town alone I can think of a half a dozen great examples (must remember to snap shots of these spots).
Seeing as how I am from New England and that I love it even more than usual in the fall months, I am a big fan of the pumpkin welcome.....

maple leaves

When the trees look like this each autumn, after being amazed by how beautiful it is, I always think of the book Look What I Did with a Leaf! by Morteza E. Sohi. If you can get your hands on a copy, it is the perfect guide for some creative crafts on a fall afternoon. I have put a copy on hold at the library and we are heading out to gather what has fallen of the sugar maples right now!

ghost pumpkins

White pumpkins are albinos, or ghost pumpkins, and are becoming increasingly popular in decorating and seasonal festivities. I liked many of the photos I came across of monogrammed white pumpkins or the albino varietals as centerpieces and in decorative displays, but I like them best as is.....just being plain, old ghost pumpkins.

kale

This time of year you can find kale everywhere from the garden centers to The Home Depot. It is beautiful in landscaping or in an indoor arrangement. The striking blend of purples and greens makes it a standout.
Sidenote: A small kale plant in a terracotta pot is a great little housewarming or token of appreciation gift. Just tie a tag with twine around the pot and the burst of bright purple is guaranteed to brighten someone's day.

oxblood

It appears oxblood is one of the colors for Fall. It is a deep red that I think looks good on everyone.  Here is a trendy little wishlist of things out there in autumn's hottest hue.... (my favorite is the purse)

descriptive writing

I am in awe of the writers who can move you through time and space, ultimately putting you where and when their stories take place. Being pulled so far into a story that you lose track of the hours and your own world is one of the greatest pleasures of reading.
In a novel I read recently, I was completely impressed with the author's various descriptions of Boston in late autumn. But, it was not because he was transporting me to a time and place I had never been, it was because he perfectly summed up a season in a city where I had lived in a simple paragraph. In so many words, he got it.... just how I saw it and felt it. When that happens, it is almost more impressive than being transported to another place and time.....it is at least equally amazing.

By early November in Boston the trees have lost most of their leaves. On wet days the branches and trunks are black and slick looking. In the afternoons a damp hard wind blows off the harbor, and then darkness swells up out of the tar streets, and the traffic lights shine like jewels. It is not winter but no longer truly fall, and the tourists are gone, and the city is stripped down to a tight rhythm of moneymaking: the mouths of subways suck in clots of workers and breathe them out again across town; the streets are full of taxis and delivery trucks and touched with a kind of coldness and sadness I have always secretly liked. - A Little Love Story, Roland Merullo

Five Autumns

This fall marks five autumns since we moved from the city to, well, the country really.
Five autumns away from our lives of late night dinners with friends, last minute road trips, and those weekend mornings involving multiple, uninterrupted cups of coffee.
Having a baby really does change your world.....having three babies in five years, flips it all upside down.
Five autumns of first steps, runny nose maintenance, constructing perfectly jumpable leaf piles, and picking pumpkins. Five autumns of waking due to scary Halloween dreams, writing names for the first time, and learning to wave bye-bye.

I was thinking, when I watched my youngest blow her sweet and sloppy 8-month-old's kisses.....five autumns of babies or toddlers and every little incredible thing they do and are- that is something that won't come around again.
So, I should pause and celebrate a little....to five autumns of wonder and more happiness with the changing of every leaf.

Fall Baby Shower

Last weekend I threw a baby shower for my sister. I knew from the beginning that since the shower was happening at the end of October I wanted a "little pumpkin" theme, but after looking all over, I was disappointed with the cartoon-y options.
I wound up using some scrapbooking accents, real mini pumpkins, fresh fall flowers and some DIY cupcake toppers to make it come together.
She was very happy with it.....so I was very happy with it :).

fall strolling

Sweet Pea and I are presently in love with weather that is finally and consistently brisk. It makes our daily walks both more energizing (for me and my homesickness for Northern falls) and lulling (for him and his coziness under a woolen blanket and hat). I really wish it was like this all year round...

"Delicious autumn! My very soul is wedded to it, and if I were a bird I would fly about the earth seeking the successive autumns."
- George Eliot
